How a band forms

Three ways into a band

  • Bring your friends

If you already play together, come together. Your coach hears the whole band, and you keep your lineup.

  • Come on your own

A coach hears you play and puts you with players of a similar age and level.

  • Bring one friend

Two friends join a band that has room for them, or we form a new band around you.

The band path

Four steps, one band

Every band rehearses each week with a coach. You move up when your band is ready, not on a clock.

  1. 01

    Plug in

Ages 12 to 17, no band needed
    Skills
    • Hold a steady beat together in one room

    • Count in, start together and stop together

    • Set up your own amp, microphone and stand

    • Play one song you know from start to finish

    Moving up

Your coach moves you up when the band can play a few songs from start to finish. Every player moves at their own pace.

  2. 02

    Hold a song

Ages 12 to 17, after plugging in
    Skills
    • Play three songs from start to finish

    • Listen for the drummer and the bass player

    • Take a short solo or a vocal line, if you want one

    • Fix one thing at a time with your coach

    Moving up

Your coach and your band talk it over once the songs hold together. Every band moves at its own pace.

  3. 03

    Build a set

Ages 12 to 17, after a few songs
    Skills
    • Choose and order the songs for a set

    • Handle the gaps between songs

    • Run your own sound check

    • Play a set for family and friends at a show

    Moving up

After a show, your band and your coach decide what comes next. Every band moves at its own pace.

  4. 04

    Write your own

Ages 15 to 17, by invitation
    Skills
    • Bring a riff or a line to rehearsal

    • Shape a song with your bandmates

    • Record a rehearsal to listen back

    • Play your own song at a show

    Moving up

Writing bands are chosen with their coaches. Ask us how a spot opens.

The rooms

A rehearsal room that is yours for the night

Each rehearsal room has amps, a drum kit and microphones set up, so you can walk in with your guitar or your sticks and play.

Each band has up to six players. A coach is in the room for every rehearsal, and earplugs are available.

  • Bands of friends or bands we match

  • A coach in the room for every rehearsal

  • Earplugs are available in every room

Come in

Hear a band before you join

Come to a class and listen to a rehearsal for your age group. A coach will find the right band for you.
